Health and Wellness Trends for a Happy & Healthy Life
Read time: 6 mins
Over the course of the past year, many people have fully committed to their health and wellness goals. Whether you’ve been health-conscious for years or you recently decided to take the leap into your wellness journey, 2021 saw the rise of an abundance of trends in personal health. We expect many of these trends to continue into this year and beyond, so we’re giving you the scoop on our top health and wellness trends for 2022.
Plant-Based Everything
Believe it or not, there was once a time when the only thing you could say to a vegetarian looking for a cheeseburger was, “That’s too bad!” Sure, they had black bean burgers, but these don’t really come close to real meat burgers in terms of taste and consistency. Now you can find plant-based burgers, sausages, ribs, even steaks! These “impossible” meats are now a reality and have continued to increase in popularity over the past year as people adopt plant-based diets.
Plant-based eating patterns focus on building a diet consisting of foods primarily from plants. This is not limited to just fruits and vegetables, but also includes nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. Vegetarian diets have been shown to improve overall health, providing benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes, lowering blood pressure, and increasing longevity.
Food isn’t the only aspect of plant-based health trends. Natural, plant-based skincare is also continuing to grow as an industry. Botanical skincare products are eco-friendly and help you avoid potentially harmful synthetic chemicals. The natural skincare industry is currently one of the fastest-growing markets in beauty.
CBD
Speaking of plants, CBD is another big player in today’s host of wellness trends. More specifically, products containing CBD oil have continued to increase in popularity. CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis plant, the same plant that marijuana is derived from. CBD oil has been used to treat pain, reduce anxiety, and stimulate appetite. Many people are attracted to CBD because it gives many of the benefits that marijuana does without affecting your mental state.
CBD products come in a variety of forms, including oil tinctures, capsules, gummies, lotions, and sprays. Many people even incorporate CBD into their cooking with special recipes using CBD oil. If you’re looking to hop on the CBD trend, we have an entire line of CBD Patches, so you can experience it in the least invasive way possible.
Wearable Health Devices
People had already been gravitating to the idea of monitoring their own health, and the Covid-19 pandemic only accelerated this adoption. According to research estimates, more than 20% of the U.S. population is expected to use a smart wearable device this year. If you took a look at our Holiday Gift Guide, you may just be one of those people. We expect wearable tech to be one of the biggest health and wellness trends yet again in 2022.
The idea of wearing a device to manage or monitor a health condition isn’t new. People have been wearing eyeglasses, for example, since at least the 13th century. Many people with diabetes have used wearable glucose monitors to keep track of their blood sugar since 1999. As technology advances, these devices are becoming more sophisticated and more convenient, hence why they’re one of the biggest health trends currently.
There’s growing evidence that wearable health devices can help you achieve wellness and fitness goals. One study found that people at risk for heart disease got more daily steps on average when they wore a Fitbit than those who did not. This group also experienced decreases in blood pressure. Devices that track activity can spur people to be more active in their daily routine, and at the very least, help people manage their fitness portfolio.
Smartwatches (like Fitbit and the Apple Watch) are the most common forms of wearable health tech, but some other examples include wearable ECG monitors, blood pressure monitors, and wearable biosensors, which are still in their infancy but hold the potential to revolutionize telemedicine by creating two-way feedback between the user and their doctor.
Sleep Tracking
Some days you may wake up feeling refreshed, whereas on others you may feel like you barely slept at all—despite getting the same amount of sleep. This can largely be attributed to an unregulated sleep cycle. People are becoming more aware of this, which is why sleep tracking is another big part of today’s wellness trends.
When you’re passed out for the night, you cycle through four stages of sleep. It’s important to make it through all four stages of sleep to wake up feeling well-rested. Many people have started downloading sleep tracking apps to help ensure they get enough sleep. Some apps will even track which stage of sleep you’re in and wake you up during the lightest stage so that you feel refreshed. Many of the wearable health devices we previously mentioned also help with sleep regulation. Nailing down the best sleep schedule for you can do wonders for your mental and physical health, not to mention you will find yourself feeling better and more able to achieve your goals.
Journaling
Another way to stay on track with your goals is journaling. If you had any of the same New Years resolutions as us, you may already have started keeping a journal. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you understand them more clearly and also clear your mind from the clutter of living a busy life. This can do wonders for your emotions and mental health.
In addition to the mental health benefits, journaling can also help you track physical fitness goals and see where you can improve. In our opinion, journaling is essential for anyone looking to maintain a strong fitness routine, at the very least in the short term when you are establishing what that routine looks like.
